Organisations have been forced to adjust their business practices during this unprecedented time thanks to COVID-19. Thankfully technology enables us to keep everyone healthy and safe while keeping business going. Virtual meetings are now common practice and as organisations look to expand their teams, so are interviews.
Here are 10 tips to make sure you put your best foot forward in your virtual interview and successfully make your career move!
Set Yourself Up Professionally
Set up in a well-lit space that is quiet, clean and enough signal strength to allow for clear communication a few minutes before the designated time. Turn off call-waiting and be sure to have a backup phone number to call in case the video-conference is cut off.
Make sure your device is elevated off your desk and in line with, or a little higher than, your face otherwise the camera may give you a double chin and your interviewer a bird’s-eye view up your nose!
For many of us, WFH involves making allowances for children and pets. Have the interview set for a time when they are occupied and less likely to interrupt you.
Dress for the interview
Wear an appropriate outfit that is neat and ironed so that you’re as smartly presented as if you were face-to-face.
Know your CV details
It’s always better to remember the details of your CV off by heart, however keep a copy of it (and a drink of water) at hand, just in case. Try not to shuffle papers as the sound can be amplified.
A positive attitude wins every time
Smile, make a concerted effort to maintain eye contact and remember to always be positive.
Follow your interviewer’s cues
Mirror the attitude of your interviewer by looking carefully at their facial cues.
Silence is OK
Try not to interrupt the interviewer or feel that you have to fill a silence.
Research the organisation
Remember that standard interview rules apply: research the organisation and prepare just as you would for a face-to-face interview.
Ask questions
Virtual interviews prevent you from getting a firsthand feel for the organisation and its culture, so use the opportunity to ask questions. Your interviewer will expect them!
Your recruiter will get you the best package
Your recruiter will have a clear understanding of both parties’ expectations for the role as well as where it fits in the market, and they’ll work hard to make sure you’re satisfied with with the remuneration package you sign up for.
Be Your Best Self
Remember, this should be a win-win situation. Not only as a great career move for you but also as a valuable new team member for the organisation. You’ve got this!
